How to Add Color to Laser Engraving: A WeCreate Laser Projects Checklist

Here's the thing: I run a small sign shop just outside Toronto, and I've been doing laser engraving orders for about seven years. Between laser engraving Toronto clients and local makers, colored logos keep me busy. I own a WeCreate laser cutter (CO2) and a WeCreate fiber laser for metal work. In my first year, I ruined a $320 walnut panel by trying to add color to an engraving. I brushed dark blue paint over the letters, wiped "gently," and pulled half the pigment right out of the lines. It looked like a wet fingerprint. The order went in the trash.

Since then, I've made—and documented—about 30 significant mistakes, totaling roughly $8,000 in wasted material and redo time. Now I maintain our shop's checklist so the newer people don't repeat my errors. This is that checklist.

Who this is for

This is for anyone searching "how to add color to laser engraving" and expecting a simple answer. It's not one step. But it is a repeatable process. If you're using a WeCreate laser cutter or similar CO2 machine, these steps will get you most of the way. If you're using a fiber laser for stainless steel, the process is different—I'll get to that in Step 4.

Full disclosure: I'm not a materials scientist. I can't explain every chemical interaction between paint and charred wood. What I can tell you is what works in a real shop after 150-ish colored engraving jobs. If you're working with a material I don't mention, my experience might not apply.

The six-step checklist

From the outside, adding color to laser engraving looks like a two-step craft: engrave, then paint. The reality is that most failures happen before the paint goes near the surface. Here's the overview: choose the material, mask it, engrave at the right depth, choose the right color medium, wipe it off with a system, and seal it before you celebrate. That's it. The details are where the color lives or dies.

Step 1: Choose the material before you choose the color

Not all wood is the same. I assumed "same specifications" meant same results when I bought a batch of birch plywood from a new supplier. Didn't verify. It turned out the top layer was paper-thin maple, and the engraved lines were too shallow to hold paint. Learned never to assume the material chart applies to every sheet.

For wood, use tight-grain species: birch, alder, or cherry. Open-grain woods like red oak will sometimes wick paint along the grain, no matter how carefully you wipe. For acrylic, cast acrylic works much better than extruded for color fill. If you're engraving walnut, test first—some walnut has a natural oil that rejects water-based paint.

How do you know if the depth is right? Run your finger over the line. If you can't feel it, it's too shallow. An old sign maker told me: "If you can't feel it, it won't hold color." That's a bit rough, but it's true for most filled engravings.

Step 2: Mask everything you care about

Here's the step most people skip: cover the entire surface with transfer tape or contact paper before you engrave. The laser cuts through the tape, leaving the engraved areas exposed. When you wipe color over the top, the tape keeps the surrounding surface clean. Remove the tape, and the color stays in the lines.

Why does this matter? Because cleanup is the difference between a $10 job and a $150 job. I used to skip masking because it took time. That's exactly how I ruined a sign in September 2022: color bled into the exposed wood around the letters, and no amount of sanding fixed it. $890 in redo and a week-long delay. Now masking is non-negotiable.

The WeCreate laser projects library and the support database at wecreate-laser.com (accessed January 2025) both recommend masking for color-fill work. I read it and didn't listen. Listen. It's in there for a reason.

Step 3: Engrave at a consistent depth

For most wood, set your power and speed so the line is dark but not deeply charred. Too much char = deep pits that collect color in weird ways. Too little = no place for color to sit.

My rule now: test three settings on scrap from the exact same batch. I set the WeCreate laser cutter at 35/250, 45/200, and 55/160 (power/speed), then look at each one under bright light. It takes ten minutes and saves a lot of wasted material. "But it's basically the same material." That's what I thought before I got burned. The same thing can happen if you change suppliers, or if the wood sits in a humid shop for a month.

Step 4: Choose the color medium for the material

For wood, I use thinned-down acrylic craft paint. Mix it with 10–15% water, not more. Too much water makes the paint bleed into the grain. For acrylic sheet, use a solvent-based paint or a dedicated acrylic fill—water-based paint tends to bead. For slate, I use a pigment paste; for glass, enamel paint.

Now, the fiber laser engraving question: if you're engraving stainless steel, you're not filling the line with paint. Color on fiber laser is about heat. You can get yellow, brown, blue, and even purple on certain stainless alloys by adjusting frequency and power. That's a completely different process, and honestly, it's more like cooking than painting. The WeCreate fiber laser presets are a decent starting point, but I've had to adjust every job by hand. Test on a scrap piece—especially if you need to match a specific shade.

Step 5: Fill, wait, wipe—in that order

Apply the color with a soft rubber squeegee or a credit card. A brush leaves streaks. Spread it across the engraved area in a thin, even layer. Let it sit for 30–60 seconds. Then wipe at a 45-degree angle across the lines, not along them.

Why 45 degrees? Because wiping along the line drags the color out. Wiping perpendicular presses it into the groove. Sounds small. It's not. The first time I did this correctly, I actually said, "Oh. That's how it works."

Take this with a grain of salt: I'm not 100% sure why some paints behave differently on different woods. The oil in the wood seems to matter more than the paint color. But the 45-degree wipe is universal.

Step 6: Let it dry, then seal it

Here's the part that feels wrong: when you peel the masking tape, some color will look semi-dry. Don't panic. Let the piece dry for at least a few hours—overnight is better. Then, if you used masking, peel it slowly at an angle. This little step is where crisp edges appear.

After that, seal the engraving. For wood, I prefer a spray shellac or a thin coat of water-based polyurethane. One light pass, let it dry, then another. Do not use a thick layer, or it'll pool in the recessed lines and turn into a cloudy mess. For metal, you usually don't need a sealer unless the part will face weather.

The things I still have to nag people about

I keep a log of every screw-up. In the past 18 months, the same three mistakes keep showing up:

  • Rushing the test. I've caught 47 potential errors by testing first. The one time I skipped the test because I was behind schedule? I ruined a $200 personalized cutting board order.
  • Using too much water. It makes the paint easier to push, but it also makes it seep under the tape. Use 10% water. Maybe 15% for a dry wood like basswood. No more.
  • Peeling the tape before the paint is dry. Wait. Seriously. Wait.

Skipped masking because "it's just a quick job." That one time it mattered. It always matters.

When this checklist won't save you

Honestly, this process works for wood, acrylic, slate, and some metals with fiber laser. But if you're looking to add color to stone by kiln firing, or if you need a full-color photo engraving, this isn't enough. That gets into specialized territory, which isn't my expertise. I'd recommend consulting someone who does sublimation or ceramic printing.

Also, if your machine's power is too low to etch deep enough, no color technique in the world will hold. Sometimes the fix isn't the color. It's the engraving depth.

That's the checklist. It's not glamorous. But when a client asks for a colored logo on a wood sign, this is the process that gets it done without a redo. And if you're running a WeCreate laser cutter, you already have most of the tools. The checklist adds the discipline.
