How to Start a Laser Engraving Business: Buying a WeCreate-Laser for Gold Engraving and Large-Format Work

If your question is how to start a laser engraving business, or simply how to make a laser purchase look sane to a finance team, start with your material list and the largest work-piece you will ever accept. Do not start with wattage. In 2024, after one expensive assumption too many, my company bought a WeCreate-Laser engraver and a separate fiber marker for in-house awards and signage.   • Laser safety eyewear rated for the specific wavelength, plus a fire extinguisher rated for electrical equipment.
  • Extra lenses, nozzle consumables, and enough scrap stock to build your own material settings library.

Anyone who compares only the base price of two laser brands is missing the real comparison. A machine with no extraction path and no realistic maintenance plan can cost more in the first month than a better-supported machine with the right accessories. When people ask me how to start a laser engraving business, many expect the answer to be buy a laser and open an online store. They do not expect a purchasing administrator to say the machine is the least important part, but that is what our experience showed. The workflow, material knowledge, safety setup, and quoting process are what turned the equipment into lower costs.

For a small business, I would use the same logic: identify products, set realistic prices, and calculate the number of jobs required each month before buying anything. If a machine costs about $150 per month in depreciation and consumables, and each job earns $10 in gross margin, then you need 15 revenue jobs per month just to cover the machine. If you cannot see that volume on paper, renting machine time or outsourcing is lower risk. A laser engraver is a tool for earning, not a business model by itself.

Where I draw the line: honest limitations

Would I recommend a wecreate laser engraver for every buyer? No, and that is true of any brand in this category. If your plan is eight hours a day of continuous production, you should look at an industrial machine with a service contract. If your product is fine solid-gold jewelry with complex geometry, you need a specialist setup and probably an experienced operator. If your engraving volume is under about 25 pieces a month, outsourcing will probably be cheaper until volume catches up.
